Efrem Yarber, Ed.D., is the principal of Monroe County Middle School where he leads the district’s 900 middle level students, 94 full-time employees, and oversees the schools annual budget.  Prior to serving in Forsyth, he was principal at Central High School (2012-2014), Bloomfield Middle School (2009-2012), and Union Elementary School (2004-2009).  He also served as Assistant Principal at Heritage Elementary School (2003-2004) and Cynthia Weir Elementary School (2001-2003).

In 2014, Dr. Yarber was charged with advancing the progress of the already well performing Monroe County Middle School (MCMS).  He has worked diligently to develop the school’s practices, culture, and climate to ensure a student-focused environment.  Through his leadership, the school has improved in both academic performance as well as behavior, resulting in a safe and healthy learning experience focused on individual student growth and achievement.

During Dr. Efrem Yarber’s tenure, MCMS is seeing improvements:


  • Milestones Highlights 2017-18

6th grade ELA:  Percent passed increased from 73% to 79%

6th grade ELA:  Weighted score increased from 60% to 66%

7th grade ELA:  Percent passed increased from 72% to 76%  

7th grade Math:  Percent passed increased from 79% to 80%

8th grade Science:  Percent passed increased from 65% to 83%

8th grade Science:  Weighted score increased from 61% to 80%

8th grade SS:     Percent passed increased from 87% to 88 %

8th grade SS:     Weighted score increased from 81% to 85%

8th grade Math: Percent Passed = 94%

  • Fact Fluency (6th grade)

Sixth grade students are given a multiplication and division test at the beginning of school.  At the end of the school year (May 2018), the percent passed increased from 13% to 83% (-w- 90% or higher accuracy).

6th grade lexile increased by 12%

7th grade lexile increased by 10%

8th grade lexile increased by 3%

As part of his community involvement, he is a member of the 2017-2018 Leadership Monroe Cohort and 2018-2019 MCMS School Council. He also serves on the Teacher Education Advisory Council for Gordon State College. He was featured in Georgia Family Magazine (2014) after an increase of Central High School’s graduation rate by 13.6% in a year.  Dr. Yarber is a member of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

Dr. Yarber earned his doctorate and specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the Argosy University, master of middle grades education degree from Fort Valley State University, and a bachelor of arts in English from Fort Valley State University.  He has also studied at Clark Atlanta University and Troy University, where he earned his initial Georgia leadership certification.  Dr. Yarber began his education career as a substitute teacher, and a middle and elementary school teacher in middle Georgia.

Dr. Yarber is excited about what our next generation of students will accomplish and bring to our community.  By leading MCMS, he feels he has contributed to each student’s life and success in some way.
